High Wycombe RFC

After a few training sessions we were delighted to host Drifters on a sunny Sunday morning for a training/development session followed up by a game. The first hour was dedicated to coaching and development and it was great see both teams mixing and to see the boys training together with great tempo and enthusiasm in some serious heat!

Whilst we know the boys enjoy coaching they were all chomping at the bit to play the game of two 20 minute half’s with a couple of our lads helping out Drifters due to a some injuries, big thank you to those lads who never moaned and played like they had joined Drifters for the season (who can forget Alex breaking our line and nearly scoring against us, which would have resulted in him being dropped next week lol).

This was our first run out as a team and we were fortunate to have great numbers on the day 24 players, which meant many changes during the game and players playing in different positions and having to adapt quickly. We began with a try after some strong play from the forwards and then conceded 3 minutes later and the game followed this pattern with both teams always looking dangerous in attach but more vulnerable in defence.

Towards the end of the second half we conceded a try after pinning Drifters into their 22 meters but switching off in defence and a superb solo try from the drifters centre looked like winning the game.

We then showed character and determination to keep going and Louis intercepted a looping pass 10 meters outside of Drifters try line and had enough momentum to get over the line. We then had the drama of a last kick of the game conversion to win the game 24-22 and our kicking machine Will Benning coolly converted from 5 meters inside the touchline a great kick!

Well done to the try scorers, Kai, Dagan, Alfie and Louis and as we know they only scored because of there teammates beside them so a huge well done to all players, brilliant start to season.
