Our ambition is to provide all members of our community with the opportunity to enjoy rugby union football, regardless of age, ability or background, in a fun, safe and friendly atmosphere

Who we are as a club and what we have been doing in our community

High Wycombe Rugby Club was established as early as the 1890s and has been housed in our current clubhouse on the Mead since 1971. Whilst we are proud to say we have produced several international players, including a British & Irish Lion, what we are most proud of is the thousands of players who have come through our club doors to play rugby over the years.

We are, at our very heart, a community rugby club and we believe that comes through in what we do and how we do it. We are proud of our High Wycombe heritage and what our club has to offer and aim to see the club continue to offer the benefits so many have already had, for many years to come. We believe that participation in rugby provides huge physical benefits, fosters confidence, teamwork and provides livelong friendships.

Our Rugby Club offers team participation with various levels of play, from youth teams to adult leagues for both men and women, and we provide facilities for training, matches, social gatherings and more.

As a club we are committed to continue to support our local community. The appointment of our first Head of Community Coaching, Scott Winton, provides us with the resources to continue to invest in local initiatives. In the last year we have been working with a number of schools across the Wycombe area to provide access to rugby. We have worked with Scouts and Beavers groups in our local community and run sessions to promote Girls rugby as part of a wider RFU initiative. We have also partnered with organisations like Talk Therapies, Bucks County Council and Age UK to expand the reach of our community work. Furthermore, we have previously teamed up with Buckinghamshire Council to obtain funding for HAF camps, catering to children aged 5-12 receiving free school meals.

These camps featured diverse activities including sports and arts, with successful Christmas and Easter camps for 90 and 180 children respectively already completed, which provided a vibrant platform for kids to stay active, explore our facilities, and connect with the club.

School Programmes

In the last 2 years we have partnered with nearly 20 schools in and around High Wycombe, offering a range of sessions across Primary and Secondary Schools.

Over the next few pages we would like to tell you more about the opportunities we believe we can offer you in your school and to start the conversation around working with you in the coming weeks and months.

Primary Schools

HWRUFC offers specialized rugby coaching, P.E. sessions, and after-school clubs. To date we have partnered with 11 primary schools, engaging with over 500 children in and around High Wycombe, promoting club membership, and delivering high-quality, safe, and fun sessions.

We can provide tag rugby lessons during the school day, best suited to Year 3s and above. This can be in the form of a single, one-off ‘showcase’ lesson or over the course of half a term (or longer); we are flexible with what we can do and will always shape the rugby syllabus to you.

We are more than happy to cater to your needs, working with the year groups you want and taking on board any specific areas you would like us to focus on. We are able to cater to all abilities, ages and experiences, whether your students are completely new to the sport or take part regularly.

Our sessions focus on getting children active and engaged in a new sport, learning new skills and, above all, having fun!

Students will be taught a wide range of different skills throughout the term, from rugby specific movements (i.e. catching, passing, kicking etc.) to more broader skills, such as effective communication, decision making and teamwork.

A breakdown of how a term’s worth of rugby sessions might look is below:

Week 1

Showcasing rugby

Getting children moving in a rugby setting, through races and activities

Week 2

Evasion skills

Working on agility, dodging defenders and scoring

Week 3-4

Handling

Learning how to catch and pass a rugby ball effectively, bring them into game situations

Week 5-6

Attack & Defence

Attacking scenarios, effective defending and game situations

Week 7-8

Small sided games

Bringing together everything that has been learnt over the term into games and matches

There are no fees for sessions during the school day. We believe that it is important that all children are able to try rugby in a way they might not be able to otherwise and we look to inspire children to take up the sport following our sessions. Rugby is a wonderful sport for all!

After School Clubs (ASCs)

On top of lessons during the day, we can provide ASCs for you. These sessions would be paid for (see below) and are more focused and intensive sessions, building on the skills developed during lessons. ASCs are perfect for both more experienced players looking for extra coaching, or those that are perhaps interested in picking the sport up outside of school. As with the lessons, we are able to tailor the ASCs to what you desire; whether you want these to supplement lessons, develop year group teams for competitions or provide another avenue for your pupils to give a different sport a go, we can create a tailor-made ASC syllabus based on your aims.

Pricing:

For primary schools, we can offer two options for funding ASCs:

  • £30 hourly rate (paid by the school to HWRUFC)
  • £5 per session per child (paid by parents to HWRUFC)

Secondary Schools

HWRUFC actively engages with 6 secondary schools, offering after school sessions, a girls' program funded by Sport England and a Year 7 (Under 12) transition program

We can provide contact-based lessons to students from Year 7 and above, for both boys and girls. This can be in the form of a single, one-of ‘showcase’ lesson or over the course of half a term (or longer); we are flexible with what we can do and will always shape the rugby syllabus to you. We are more than happy to cater to your needs, working with the year groups you want and taking on board any specific areas you would like us to focus on. While our focus with secondary school students is on contact rugby, we are more than happy to utilise touch rugby as an alternative for those unsure about or unfamiliar with contact.

Our sessions will be suitable for all abilities, from complete beginners to more experienced individuals and will be planned in a way that allows for everyone to take part safely. Students will be taught a wide range of essential rugby skills, including catching and passing, correct tackle technique, rucking, attacking situations, kicking skills and evasion, before bringing it all together in games. The main emphasis of these sessions will be on introducing contact to students safely, following all current RFU guidelines.

On top of this, we look to build on an individual’s confidence; contact rugby can be intimidating for those new to the sport, but we can provide the necessary coaching to safely and effectively teach tackle technique and improve a student’s confidence with it.
